A BRIEF SURVEY OF SOME OF THE MAULE VARIANT SURNAMES.

There is no doubt that the original name of the French family was (de) Maule and this form remained the most popular in France and usually in Scotland. However, the spelling of the Maule name phonetically led to many variations being used by the 16th. century particularly in England. Some of these spellings became fixed as family names and were exported to many parts of the world.
(See "EARLY ENGLISH RECORDS"for some idea of the variety of ways in which the name was recorded in England up to the end of the 16th. century.)

In a few cases the Maule names have derived from a totally different root, two families in Suffolk and Essex are descendants of the de Mauley family of Yorkshire. I am researching one family now in which the original name may prove to have been Molle.

The most common variations have been Maul, Maull, and Mall. I have not always been able to prove a connection between the Mall form and Maule. So it is possible that Mall may also have developed as a variant of another name.

In some parts of Scotland the form Maw, and possibly Mow, was used, I have been informed that this was the way that Maule was pronounced there at one time.

In Russia the records of the German Glueckstal colonies in South Russia show several families with the name spelled as Maeule. The 'ae' spelling is a method of showing the German 'a umlaut'.

When searching old records, therefore, it is always advisable to check occurrences of all Mau..., Maw...and Mall.. names. Searching by computer in some databases can conveniently be done, where Soundex searches are supported, by the use of the codes M400 and M000. These methods will show other records that are unlikely to be derived from Maule but at least you will not miss those that are.

In the older documents in latin the forms Maulia and Maulea are used. Masculus and Masculo also appear and may be other variants. de Malo Lacu is the latin form of the de Mauley name.
