INTRODUCTION TO THE ARMS OF MAULE FAMILIES AND INDIVIDUALS.

I must explain that I am no expert in heraldry and if any errors of nomenclature have crept into this page I hope that someone more knowledgeable than myself will point them out.

I must also apologise for the quality of my attempts to computer-draw some of the shields and achievents. I am no expert in this field either!

ARMS OF THE LORDS OF MAULE.

The field is 'party per pale argent and gules'. The bordure sable may originally have been a distinguishing feature, or mark of cadency. However, it is on the earliest arms of which I can find a description, c. 1240. The escallops are very widely used heraldic charges, they originally were the badge of pilgrims to the shrine of St. James of Compostella in Spain and later of pilgrims to the Holy Land. They were first used on the shields of many families who sent representatives to the Crusades, as did the Lords of Maule. They later came to signify that either the bearer or an ancestor had been a Crusader or had made a long pilgrimage. The number of escallops in the bordure varied from eight to more than twelve as is shown by the individual descriptions below.

PETER de MAULE b. ?1168: d. c1240.

His seal is described as 'parti with a bordure of nine escallops' and carries the legend "SIGILLUM PETRI DE MAVLIA +"

ROBERT de MAULE b. ?1170: d. 1248.

The brother of Peter, above. His arms were painted in the Church of Maule are described as follows:-
'parti argent and gules, within a bordure sable of twelve escallops of the first with helmet, mantling and wreath upon which are three ostrich feathers, or, for crest, and supported by two savages proper, wreathed about the middle'.

WILLIAM de MAULE b. ?1200.

The seal of William, the eldest son of Robert has eight escallops in the bordure.

BARTHOLOMEW de MAULE b. ?1202.

The arms of Bartholomew, the second son of Robert were also painted in the Church but with lions as supporters.

REGINOLDE de MORAINVILLIERS b. ?1365.

The daughter of the last of the 'de Maule' Lords of Maule, married Simon de Morainvilliers in 1398. The Morainvilliers became the new Lords of Maule and carried the arms of Maule with many escallops, quartered with their own.

Quartered first and fourth argent, nine little birds (merles), four, three and two sable, second and third parted per pale argent and gules, a bordure sable of a great many escallops, more than twelve.

ARMS OF THE MAULES OF PANMURE.

The arms of the Maules of Panmure differ from those of the French family by the bordure being partitioned and it and the charges counterchanged. The number of escallops used was eight in the arms of Sir William Maule drawn about 1296, but nine in the arms of his son Sir Henry Maule about 1320. For some reason the arms of Maule of Panmure as blazoned by Sir David Lindsay, Lion King of Arms, in 1540 shows only six escallops. Since that time the number has become fixed at eight.

The full quartered shield of the house of Panmure incorporating the arms of de Valoniis, Brechin and Brechin-Barclay which are incorporated in the line of the Barons and Earls of Panmure is blazoned as follows:-

quarterly; first parted per pale argent and gules a bordure charged with eight escallops all counter changed of the same for Maule; second argent three pallets waved gules for de Valoniis; third quarter, quarterly first and fourth azure a chevron betwixt three crosses patee, argent; second and third, or, three piles issuing from the chief, conjoined by the points in base gules, for Barclay, Lord Brechin, and the fourth grand quarter as trhe first:which is adorned with crown, helmet and violets befitting their quality; and, on a wreath of their tinctures a dragon vert spouting out fire before and behind, proper, for crest; with a motto; on an escrol, clementia et animis; and supported by two greyhounds, proper, collared gules, charged with escallops argent.

ARMS OF THE de MAULEY FAMILY.

The arms of the de Mauley family of Mulgrave Castle, Yorkshire are shown above. They are blazoned: or, a bend sable.

The arms of the younger sons were differenced by the addition of charges to the bend. Sir Robert de Mauley, second son of Peter II are: or, on a bend sable three eagles displayed argent. The arms of Sir John, Peter II's youngest son were: or, on a bend sable three dolphins embowed or.

Changes of the field may also have been used to indicate cadency. The arms of the Mawley family of Yorkshire were: argent, on a bend sable three eagles displayed of the first. This should indicate descent from Sir Robert de Mauley. The arms of the Mawles of Suffolk and the Maules of Essex are: argent, on a bend sable three dolphins embowed or, in chief a crescent gules. This would indicate descent via a second son from Sir John de Mauley.

ARMS OF REV. GEORGE MAULE M.A., S.T.B.
