INTRODUCTION TO MAULE FAMILY HISTORY

These pages were previously included in the Maule Family History site. Unfortunately, I am no longer able to maintain that site because of illness. However, Jim has very kindly offered to archive these pages within the Maule Genealogy Home Pages.

My grateful thanks to Jim and to all the other Maule researchers listed below who have assisted me over the years and who have added so much to our present knowledge of the various branches of the family by their generous contribution of own researches and/or documents.

ABBREVIATIONS
I have used the standard Chapman Codes for all counties in Great Britain and Eire, the ISO3166 three-letter codes for countries. These, the codes for American and Australian States, for Canadian Provinces and a key to the other abbreviations that I have used in family trees and records are given on this page.

HISTORY
This page gives a brief history of some of the Maule families and their movement to various countries around the world.

MAULE, FRANCE
A description and outline of the history of the town from which the main Maule families of France and Scotland originated and from which they took their name.

FAMILY TREES
A short history and a Family Tree of the Lords of Maule in France, the Earls of Panmure in Scotland, Maules in the family of the Earls of Dalhousie and the de Mauley family of Mulgrave Castle in Yorkshire. Extra biographical notes on some members of these families are linked directly from the family trees.

BIOGRAPHIES
Some biographies of outstanding and/or interesting members of Maule families.

COATS OF ARMS
Description and some drawings of the arms of the French and Scottish Maule families and individuals. The connection which has been established between the de Mauley family and some English Maule families, through their coats of arms, is also demonstrated.

KNOWN FAMILIES
A table showing the ancestor, name changes, place of origin and later movement of the branches of the 78 Maule families of three or more generations which have been researched up to March 2000.

VARIANT NAMES
A look at the various forms which the Maule name has taken and an analysis of the frequency of the occurence of these variants in English and Scottish records.

EARLY ENGLISH RECORDS
My own collection of early Maule records in England from 1200 to 1600. These give a good idea of the spelling variations of the name used in the records of this country.

INTERNET LINKS
Links to various internet genealogical sites with Maule information which may be of use to researchers.
These links were all working in March 2000.

MESSAGE ARCHIVE
An archive of all messages that were posted to the 'Message Board' at the Maule Family History site, from the time the Message Board was launched in June 1998 until it was closed in August 1999.
